How many of us do manual (by hand) submission vs. Automated (Topp Dogg, Web Position Gold, Selfpromotion.com) submission or enjoy the wait and see (googlebot etc.) of the spiders?

Like Lucky, we've been submitting manually and for some sites, waiting for the links to be found.
We're reevaluating our submission strategy right now in response to the changes that have occurred (especially the penalty for submitting sites through the free add url).
So my question is, is it better to focus on "link" submission (focusing on getting the spiders to "find" sites) or should we continue using both methods?
Personally, I'm thinking it's still effective to use both manual submission and submitting link pages and directory pages in order to be "found".
