How would one go about implementing an in-house one-on-one chat service without the use of JAVA?

I want to be able to cater to my clients without having to necessarily use a phone (I can always have a computer around, but not necessarily our landline business phone). I want to set up a chat system that gives me a queue of people chatting with me and I can talk to them one-on-one.

There was a post a while back with a good chat system, but it didn't work ultimately for me.

I found that AOL IM works very well. Not the best, but a lot of people have it.

Of course if you want to pay.....

Felipe, here's an Open Source Perl chat script you could try: EveryChat [everysoft.com].
