I'm throwing this out here because maybe some of you have had this problem. When I log on CuteFTP everything connects and passwords are correct -- but no files show up on the right hand side of the screen...then a timeout occurs. I've changed nothing since the last time I was on the program, which worked like a breeze. Any suggestions as to what's going on...this is a problem I can't have for too long.

Thanks much.

That happens to me when I use cute fairly often. Usually goes right back to normal after restarting the program. Try connecting with another FTP client and see what happens.

If you log in using a "profile", check your settings under F4-Edit. What is the remote location? You might be setting for a remote directory that you do not have access to. One way to test your connection would be to remove the default remote location and connect to your FTP site. CuteFTP should take you to your ftproot.

Also, are you getting a welcome message? If not, it can be a server-side problem.

sun818 -- no there is nothing in the remote default directory?
**Also, nothing was changed since the last time I logged into a session.

I know what oilman is talking about -- I thought this would pass too.

Filipe- I dunno. I get command successful logging in all the way until it says timeout. I have files on three different servers, I can't get to any of them at all.

Do you think this could work itself out? lol...or should I call tech support.
I feel retarded.

Here's what a typical login looks like for me:

STATUS:>Connected. Authenticating...
COMMAND:>USER username
331 Password required for username.
COMMAND:>PASS ********
230 User username logged in.
STATUS:>Login successful
COMMAND:>TYPE I
200 Type set to I.
COMMAND:>CWD /home/domain/www
250 CWD command successful.
COMMAND:>pwd
257 "/home/domain/www" is current directory.
COMMAND:>TYPE A
200 Type set to A.
STATUS:>Retrieving directory listing...
COMMAND:>PORT XXX,XXX,XXX,XXX,X,XX
200 PORT command successful.
COMMAND:>LIST
150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for directory listing.
STATUS:>Received XXXX bytes Ok.
STATUS:>Time: 0:00:XX, Efficiency: X.XX KBytes/s (XXXX bytes/s)
226 Transfer complete.
STATUS:>Done.

Normally the server will drop your connection (timeout) after 5 minutes of no activity. How far do you get in this sequence and how long before the timeout occurs?

Timeout occurs less than a minute after I try and log on.

Should I re-install CuteFTP?

Thanks

I assumed you had reinstalled, you probably should do it. When using Windows, it's normally the first thing I try. Also, try to access your server from a different machine or have a trusted friend log in from their machine to insure the problem is not at the server end. From what you describe, it sounds like it's on your box.

Try logging in through your browser:

ftp://username@hostname

...to see if all's well at the server.
