Hi all, I'm seriously considering dumping my forums with something better than what I have (ultraboard).

Does anyone have any suggestions as what to look for?

I have a few in mind like vbulletin and Ikonboard. (I don't mind paying)

However I don't really know anything about these.

Does anyone on WW have or use those mentioned?

What are they like - good? - bad?

I like these very forums. Can you buy this type of forum or is it custom made?

All replies would be really appreciated.

Cheers,

Stickymaster.

I use an ASP forum available from www.ultimateasp.com for free.

I like it, it's not the best, but it works well. I've had to tweak it a bit for my needs.

Hey StickyMaster, we have this discussion frequently. Try our site search [searchengineworld.com] for some recent discussion. A search on "message board" should get you started. The site search link is available at the top of your screen.

This forum is a complete custom rewrite of a popular board (can't remember which one, sorry) and it's not available for public use.

Discussion boards are available using various scripting languages, Perl and PHP are pretty common. If you have a preference you should probably post it. Also, what hosting, *nix, IIS or what?

Here's a couple recent threads on this topic:
[webmasterworld.com...]
[webmasterworld.com...]

Brett created this board after trying BoardPower which apparently didn't fit the bill. He has said it would take a good bit of work to generalize it for sale. I've not seen any posts suggesting that he's started that project.

(note to self: type faster next time)

Hi guys, sorry for not responding sooner (ISP troubles).

Anyway I'm grateful for the replies.

I have decided to use DCforums. I like the admin side, lots of stuff to do with the forums plus they look really easy to use and the fact that they can be crawlled by Google is a big plus ;)

Thanks guys.
