Wondering if anyone has experience on this.

My mail server, DNS, and name server are hosted with my ISP and physical website hosting is using another server in U.S. using a shared IP address.

My ISP allow us to update their DNS setting so that when someone type our domain name, it will be looking at our physical website server.

However, my present website servier is using one IP address and shared by 5 different domains already.

Can someone help giving me some advice on how shall I instruct the ISP to setup the DNS?

Is an A record enough but the ip is shared by different domains?

I will need, besides, www. zzzz. com, also ftp. zzzz. com too....

I am using Apache and with access to the shell. But the control panel is using Plesk 7.

Any advice is highly appreciated...thx.

I wouldn't recommend using a shared IP address for anything other than a personal or hobbyist site.

If you MUST, then, yes, all you need is an A record.

The web server handles giving the user the right site. In order for it to work, the user MUST use your domain name, not the IP address, and must be using a reasonably modern browser. (This won't work with some very, very old browsers.)

While it would be odd for the user to type-in the IP address, it does happen. In that case they would get a message such as "there is no web server configured at this address". In some cases, they may actually get somebody else's website.
