The optimum home page size used to be 40k and download time around 12 seconds.

Has that changed since a lot of people are now on 56K or Cable?

Optimum page delivery is ASAP. Look at your pages and ask yourself if you rally needs some "featues" or fancy graphics.

Google does O.K. with a simple design.

Quicker connections have seemed to make people less patient while pages load. They don't seem to feel that there is any excuse for a page to be slow. It's not like it's their connection that's the problem any more, so it must be your page and...

*click*

They're on to the next site.

You can probably go bigger on the page size, but I don't think you'd want to go any longer on the download time. I could be wrong....

IMO, it's more important to measure "time to display usable content" than it is to look at full download time. This has a lot to do with how the page is coded -- but I look to get something usable (that is, content and not just website "decor") in front of a user in minimal time, even if the rest of the page is still downloading.
