Screen capture / screencasting etc

Camtasia and the like

I would like to ask, if making screen captures (movies) of programs (like in a how-to-use-program movie), and then selling it for money - is it against anything legal?

I've seen many screen capture movies, but they are all free e.g. capture the internet explorer browsing Google, Yahoo sites and also people capturing their own software.

Thank you to the kind souls who can enlighten me.

I'm not sure on that one.

I know that if someone did a Camtasia on my programs and sold them as training videos without my permission, I would be upset and probably start some legal action (whatever it would be).

Training of the product is actually a revenue source for businesses.

But, I've seen books like eBay for Dummies, etc. and I don't know if the authors have sought permission.

Technically the site images (screen shots, layout, etc.) are copyright by the owner so there would be all sorts of questions.

If this is something you are actually thinking about doing, I would approach the site owners first. Perhaps they'll actually want to pay YOU to do it for them!

Welcome to WebmasterWorld!

This is actually an interesting question, since you are obviously referring to do (training-)videos of software which you did NOT program yourself?

This might actually cover some intellectual property issues.

txbakers - I feel the same way too, i might ignite some anger in the creators of the program.

But what if the program is open source, or under the GNU license? Whoo to look for/go after?

pmkpmk - Yes, learning the program is actually very involved, but I would like to spread the knowledge without everyone going thru my steps (and maybe giving up halfway).

But for my efforts I would like to receive monetary rewards in return. As it will take time to figure everything out, and then laying it all out nicely for less competent people to produce the same results in less time, like an idiot's guide.

Thank you both for your responses!

I'd make some attempt to contact an owner and ask permission to resell the help screens.

Just because it's GNU doesn't mean it's free. Just like you, someone spent many hours developing that software.

It's worth a few hours of your time to track down someone to ask.

Thx txbakers.

I have been trying to look for someone I can contact, but there is not one representative.

I've also been reading up licenses for clues, but to no avail.

I intend to donate a percentage of my proceeds to aid their development instead, and also put up a notice to have someone contact me if they have a clue.

Anyone with constructive workarounds is appreciated. =)
