I have a forum site and I have 4 domains that are all related to the same topic. I want to forward the 4 domains to the main site so to bring all related traffic to the forum. Is the best way to do this by changing the dns of the 4 domaisn to that of the main site? Or should I forward it through my registrar? To me it wouldnt make sense to forward because my registrar charges me for this. I just want to know what would be the best way of doing this and not hurting my search engine rankings in the future.

I can't tell you about search engine rankings, but I would change the A records of the four domains so they all point to the same IP address.
