I know this might not be a good place to post my question, but I visist this forum regularly, hope someone can give me suggestions or tell me where I should find relevent information.

We are going to transfer our web hosting from ISP share IP to in-house hosting. Now I have following questions:

1. For in-house hosting, we need static IP instead of dynamic IP, right?

2. Our phone company (SBC) suggest us to use high-speed DSL, is that OK for our website applications? Or we have to choose T1?

3. T1 is much more expnsive than DSL, so what is the substantial difference between high-speed DSL and T1? Which one is more approriate for in-house hosting? Or you guys have other better alternatives.

Thanks.

a static IP is preferred, there are ways to work out a dynamic IP address, but if this is your first hosting, you have many other things to worry about. Stick with a Static IP address...

Use DSL....make sure you have ample upload speed..check your package...

T1 is now "old-school"...that used to be one of the ways to go "faster"...however many DSL packages now surpass T1 line speeds...

Hope that helps...
just my 2-cents...

With DSL, typically you are using your phone company as your ISP. With a T1, you will essentially be leasing a line to your backbone provider (usually someone like Worldcom, AT&T, Sprint). The T1 will give you more (or at least easier) options for growth (things like BGP), but it is easy enough to switch, so if you are going with just a single connection to the internet, go with the DSL.

We hosted a site on a DSL line with a static IP for a year and a half and didn't have any problems other than the occasional downtime(really it was rare, not sure the %). There is *definitely* a speed issue, so keep those pages trim. With DSL it also depends on your server's physical location, you can only be so far away from a CO, but this is always changing. You can get away with using a regular home router, but you would want to have a fast server with alot of RAM.

For me I'm glad we're switching over(in process of right now) to a dedicated host. Self hosting does have its share of headaches and extra work, I much rather have someone else worry about the hardware, which lets me focus on programming.

So, I would suggest:
go with a static IP;
Go with the DSL if the T1 is a bit too pricey;
Accept that a DSL is slower, especially with uploading(which is what a server does right?) so keep the page sizes small.

To echo the above concern about maintaining hardware. For me the headaches don't stop there. Maintaining secure software is enough to give you a migrane.
