Xenu gets FTP error

Error 12031 when I tried to see orphaned files

I've used Xenu's Link Sleuth for some time to spider my own websites, looking for broken links and other surprises / issues. As my sites are large, though, I've only had the report give me site statistics and nothing else.

I recently found out that Xenu discovers Orphaned Files by actually logging into the site via FTP and then comparing what's in the directories to what's reachable online. Problem is, I keep getting this error:

Error 12031 while moving to remote ftp directory /sites/893258/mysite.com/www/images/

This error is listed in the HTML report generated, and one error is given for each directory of my site - those directories a browser would see anyway (an important distinction, think mod_rewrite). Example path isn't real, of course, but a good representative.

I asked Google about it [google.com] and that brought me to a detailed technical support page [techsupt.winbatch.com] discussing the deep nuts & bolts of interfacing with an FTP server.

This's quite over my head, but I didn't want to bug Xenu's creator just yet.

Does this mean Xenu can't interface with my server? Does it mean I merely gave it the wrong initial directory path (tried a few) and/or didn't check the "passive mode" checkbox correctly (tried both)?

Have you ever gotten an error like this before?
