Hosting or redirecting?

In light of search engine placement in the era of geotargeting, I am considering to use servers in different (key-)countries. However I use a CMS with lots of self developed add-ons, so I would require expensive dedicated hosting.

Using Apaches transparent proxy redirect feature, I could have the pages on my own server, and the remote server in the respective country will (transparantly) redirect requests to my server.

I am aware that this will (slightly) slow down the process. But will it be - in the eyes of a geotargeting search engine - the same as hosting it in the foreign country?

If you do the proxying right, no-one should be able to tell that you are doing it, even search engine bots.
