Choosing a CMS solution - blog?

I'm going to create a website for a new local charity. It's very exciting to be able to put my skills to good use for a worthy cause and I want to do my best for them but I need your help.

The charity like to be able to write about the projects that they're involved in and allow visitors to comment. They'd also allow people to post their own ideas for deserving projects. The idea here is to get some interactivity going with visitors. I'm doing this in my spare time so I need something that is fairly quick to build but can be customised so it looks good.

The first solution that comes to mind is to use a blog although I've never implemented one. I'm not yet sure whether a blog fits well with the idea of allowing people to post their own ideas. Are there better solutions around? If a blog is the right way to go then which blogs are 'best', i.e. allow customisation, are secure, etc?

Thanks for any advice.

WordPress I'd say. Very easy to set up, and you can allow users to create their own accounts and then create their own posts. You can set it so that their posts require moderation as well.
