We are setting up on a 10mbps network. The webserver and database server are on seperate machines.

Are there any optimizations that you can recommend when database server and webserver are connected over 10mbps.

Any advanced suggestions such as keeping some data on flat files on the webserver.

I don't want to sound daft, but the best optimisation you can do is to increase your network bandwidth.

100Mb/sec is so cheap nowadays and 1Gb/sec hardly breaks the bank.

Not as daft as you think.

If the traffic stays within the datacenter, I cannot understand why the host would not provide a 100mbps connection.

If the machines are right next to each other, ask for a crossover cable between them. Then you can use private addresses in the range 192.168.nnn.nnn to communicate. This presumes that these are not cheapo white boxes that only have one nic. (The nnn was exexex until the nanny filter here turned it into #*$!).

The side benefit is that this takes the database server right off the public network. It is only reachable through a connection from the web server.

the 100mbps option is available (at a cost) on a full rack.

I am looking to explore optimizations on 10mbps networks cause I am antcipating a set-up that requires more than a rack.
