Posting to a secure page

Making sure it's actually secure

If I have a login form on a non-secure page (http://), and post to a secure page (https://), is the information actually secure once you post, or is it only secure when it gets to the secure page?

I belive it is secured/encrypted in transit, from the moment it leaves your desktop.

it is secure, I have sniffed these enough times to make sure

the secure connection is established before any information is posted
