As history tells even people like Microsoft can still be brought down by DOS attacks. I don't think there is a 100% solution, but go with the best and you will be as close as possible to the best solution!
Can DDos attack be prevented?
Short answer, no.
Like yourself, our web site has apparently been targeted for a denial of service attack, and on one occassion this was successful - the CPU load was so great, and the open file handles so many that I couldn't even log in to reboot!
You can reduce the success rate of attacks. In simple terms this involves buying more expensive hosting: a dedicated server, or even better load-balanced numerous servers, install a firewall and so on.
