Managing site content online...

Probably won't be able to use FTP

Hi, I am going to be travelling for a few months and will need to maintain my sites from Internet cafes and such like in South America.

I expect dial-ups to be pretty slow so I am wondering whether anyone has ideas for adding and maintaining content without using the usual methods (I use Dreamweaver MX and CuteFTP for instance from my own PC).

I guess a content management system with a database backend might be a soultion but I'd rather have .htm pages for SEO rather than default.asp?page=4etc etc

I can hand code HTML and ASP/PHP so would be comfortable using notepad which most PCs in the world should have! I have thought about using online FTP sites but the ones I have used often don't work or time out.

So any ideas how I might manage this?

Some CMS software creates static URLs, or URLs that look static. Check out MovableType. It's known for its blog capabilities, but it's also an effective CMS. Open source CMS software that has been discussed here includes Mambo and Drupal.

One way is to compress the files to one file and decompress them after you have uploaded the file to the server. If you are dealing with lots of files then this will save you a lot of time.

check the fine print chez your host company about "movable type" there are security issues with it ..so some hosts don't let you run it ..
