The "?" in a web-address

Is it the "?" in the web-address or the flash?

Hi Everyone,

I have a Webmaster that I’ve been helping optimizing sites for the last 7 months. He sent me a website that has flash on it, and wanted to know why the spiders would not craw it. This site is also done with cold fusion. His stats page says that spiders are visiting each flash page.

I told him about the problems with flash and spiders, and that the spiders may very well be getting to each page, but they may be getting trapped or hitting a brick wall. This would still allow the stats program to log the visit by the spider, even when the spider can’t read the page. He thinks it is the “?” in the web-address that the cold fusion program uses.

I want to know if it is possible that just a “?” in the web-address could stop the spiders from reading each page?

There are a gazillion pages indexed with a question mark in the URL. In and of itself, that's not the issue.

If the URL contains a session ID after the question mark, that may be the issue.

If the URL contains too many variables after the question mark, that may be the issue.

When you say they're reaching the "flash pages", I assume you mean these are .cfm pages with a? in the URL that also happen to have Flash in the page ... and you don't mean these are "pages" within the .swf file.?
