One of My Sites is Down

My Interland hosted site is down for almost 2 hours now... called them up and they said they are working and they have no estimated end time yet..

I asked if they would have informed me if I did not find out and they said NO. Is this normal at web hosts?

I have been hosting a site at pair for a long time and they always post their system notice on support site.. so I always know when and how long my site was down.

Most hosts won't inform you if they're down. They don't have the time or the inclination. Some do have a page where they post issues.

Verio has a maintenance page that they're good about keeping updated with even minor issues ("Users between Baton Rouge and Boca Raton may experience slight delays in Web access while we work to correct routing issues").

We use Verio, there's a server health listing - it basically shows if the server is alive or dead... it's for our use (requires login) not our end-users. I don't know if that applies to their retail accounts.

Most hosting services won't inform you.

Simple Reason: A "99.9%" uptime is guaranteed at every web hosting service, and if they inform you, they may loose your trust and you may even decide to switch hosting.

They do what's best for them - a well known business tactic.

Thanks everyone.. Since one of my hosts puts these system notices on their support page, I just thought others might do that. I wish these guys provided .NET hosting also.

One of my less important webhosters is down for 2 months :)

It simply disappeared from the internet. And I had paid 1 year in advance (I was with them for almost 2 years, so I trusted them).
Always be carefull when you pay in advance...
