Hello...

Our office is thinking about starting a list server, but no one here knows much about them. If anyone could recommend something I would greatly appreciate it. We run our own servers in house so we would have to be able to install something locally. BTW we have Windows based servers...

Thanks

Do you mean mailing list servers? If so, I use the Merak mail server from IceWarp. Very happy with it.

We want to have a mailing list thats opt in. People then can submit a question, idea etc... then it goes to everyone on the list. Then people can reply to that ect... Kind of like an emailable version of a forum.

Yes, you want a mail server then.

Read the help files that come with it so you can tell subscribers how to opt-in and opt-out, etc.

There are listserver products available for professional list handling.
You may want to look at lsoft.com for the professional LISTSERV, which originally evolved decades ago in the old EARN/BITNET ages (~1985).
Other products which come into my mind are the
MAILMAN (sourceforge.net/projects/mailman/, under GNU license) and MAJORDOMO (greatcircle.com/majordomo/)

I don't use any of these products on my sites, so no recommendation is meant by mentioning these products above, I just remember them serving lists which I subscribed once.
I also have not checked, if they are available for Windows.

R.
