My users keep reporting this wierd problem: the images don't display (all they get is red X placeholders) when they start a new browser session. I have observed this too when I have used some else's machine to view my site for the first time. If one goes to another page and then returns to Home, the images display. What's *that* all about?

You probably have the links to your images pointing to a directory on your own machine instead of the web server.

Oh no. It's only some users who've reported this and some have reported no problem. I have also seen it on my machine occassionally. All my images are sourced from the server. It seems to happen when it is viewed for the first time on a machine (I suppose the page hasn't been cached before). It is a bit odd.... :(

Oh, then it may be your ISP is caching stuff oddly. I've had that happen to me over the past week with a new site. I can see it from my home ISP fine, but my ISP at work took a while to catch up.

In fact I have just moved hosts yesterday but this problem predates the move by more than 6 months. And remember I'm not just talking about my access (and my ISP here in Australia), I'm talking about several users spread all over including the USA. And it seems to effect the Home page almost exclusively.

I'd look at your site then to see whether the bottleneck is there. Does your code validate? Are your page sizes to large? Is something causing a timeout server-side? It could be a number of factors.
