.htaccess and .htpasswd

hey,

dont know if this is the right place, but here it goes anyway,

i am using .htaccess and .htpasswd to protect part of my website. i would like to know how the whole thing works. cause when i follow the links and access the protected araea, i am asked for authentication. but when i just type in the dirtect url of the protected content, i get access without any authentication. has it something to do with the fact that i have already logged in and that the session has not expired yet? if that is the case how do i log out of such a session?

any help on thsi would be great..

Once you close the browser and try to log in again you will be prompted for the pwd.
