Once you reach a certain point of growth as well as a certain amount of sites, you want to consolidate and move into managing your own servers. I think I have finally reached that point. But I have a few concerns/questions.

I want to be able to do this from my home office. ie. Run the connection here and use a box I have as the server. Im fine with the actual running/managing it task no problem.

But Im not sure if it will be too costly still.

To be honest, I just want to be able to use my own machine and administer my own network. If there were a way to send my box to a company who will hook me in to their servers and just plug it in and allow me to SSH in and configure everything - that'd be fine by me! But I am by no means looking to spend thousands of dollars a month!

Can someone lead me in the right direction? I feel as though virtual hosting is far too small, and dedicated seems too weird using someone elses box. I want to use mine! I guess its that feeling of comfort that I set it up!

Also, I dont need the fastest connection (yet) - it can be something milder... If anyone has any links to places that would help me out though, that would be wonderful!

If there are no such places, well - the best dedicated host I guess would be the next logical progression.

Thanks,
Ian

PS - I need to be allowed to do whatever I want with this server (well, not content wise - there wont be anything adult related)- technical wise though [ie. web, email, ssh, etc].

Yes, I just realized shipping my server off would just be colocating.

Now another question - do any places allow for non-rack mounted colo's?

How much am I looking to spend to start with say 20GB transfer/month with a non-rack mounted colo?

Thanks a ton!

because of the way these things are priced,
if the performance of a dedicated server
provided by the vendor is sufficient, you
are going to find it cheaper to do that
than colo a non-rackmounted self owned
box.

sorry, no links, but you can find plenty
that start at <$100.00 for a dedicated
server.
