That depends a great deal on what you want to do.

Oh, and where, and how...

Added: I recall another thread about this...it seemed so recent, but several pages down "Technology Issues" as well as "General" i did not find it. My initial response was the one from Alice in Wonderland - "if you don't know where you're going, you can take any road".

Basically you can. All these languages can do most of the same things. Here, "most" implies that you have to think hard to find a problem that only one of them can solve. Then again, if you have a special task in mind, some might be able to do it in a more efficient manner than others.

I think claus is on the money. It depends on what server OS is running, what language background you have, what needs you have in your application, and what technology can be loaded on your server.

These threads usually turn into a battle like whats better mac or pc. The truth is that all of the languages you mentioned will do different things and will be best in different situations.

If you are looking at ASP I would suggest you look at ASP.net instead. ASP will be phased out over time.

No battle - PHP is the best. ;)

Kidding aside. I'd add that while you are a blank canvas - as far as choosing a scripting language is concerned - think down the road about how much you want to work with the language. Each one has it's own limitations but they don't really become apparent until you become proficient with them.

And once you learn one, the learning curve for the others is reduced simply because the common mistakes you made as a beginner to programming will most likely be behind you.

What about JSP? What about Perl? Why not C++?

I wouldn't waste time coding a forum. There are hundreds of forums available for download.

There is no "best" server side script any more than there is a "best" hardware configuration.

IMO, ColdFusion is the easiest. But I agree, unless you want features no one is offering as a package, get one of the forum applications already available.

I don't think there's hundreds of forums, but there are quite a few. I too recommend getting one that's already built and just add/modify the features to how you want them. Building a forum from scratch that is functional as well as secure is not a trivial task.

a forum for my site

So to narrow down your selection take a look at what languages are available with your host. Then look at some forum packages to see what looks like it may have the features you want and that may also give you the tip to which language is the one for you.

claus is right on the money, and probably can't recall the recent thread(s) because this issue seems to rise much too often. Everybody is looking for the providential solution. It's like your keyboard-paranoid retired neighbor asking you which personal computer system it is you recommend their friend's uncle's cousin to buy. Well, what's the first thing you ask them? Same as claus alluded to earlier. What do you want to do?

Enough babble ;), a search on WW threads regarding this issue brought these results that you can ponder:
What programming language would you learn and why? [webmasterworld.com]
Areas for new webmaster to learn? [webmasterworld.com]
How easy is PHP to learn?
And is it as stable and useful as PERL?
[webmasterworld.com]
Fastest Web scripting language? [webmasterworld.com]

Best of luck -- coopster

Step 1: Ask your host what languages as well as database they support first.

Two more threads, still haven't fount the exact one i thought about:

(1) What programming languages are useful for writing web applications? [webmasterworld.com]

(2) Perl or PHP? [webmasterworld.com]

I think it might have been the one coopster posted "How easy is..."

>> forums for my site
