You can probably make hotmail show you the full headers of the mail. Then, look at the "Received:" lines. That will tell you the IP address of their mailserver, at least. It may actually tell you the IP address of the machine they were sitting in front of. It kind of depends on how they send their mail. Also, some web-based email applications (like hotmail, perhaps) put the IP address of the browser (typically the machine the sender is sitting in front of) in a special header. something like "X-Originating-IP:" or something like that. That should get you close to what you're after.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld programmer,

I don't know if you can get hotmail to show full headers. I checked one account I have and couldn't see any way to view them.

I do use outlook express to get mail from my hotmail account. You can then view the full headers of the message through outlook express but I don't think there is a way in the hotmail interface.

i m not concerned that from which mail server the mail is coming,i just want to know the ip address of the machine from which the mail is sending..obviously we know that mail is coming from hotmail or yahoo..this is not required to know..i just need the IP of the sender.and i dont know from where in the header i can locate.
please do me a favour.

Open the message at Hotmail and look for this phrase:

"View E-mail Message Source"

You'll see it just above the Reply, Reply ALL and Forward boxes.

When that opens into another window you'll be able to examine the message.
