Addon Domains & Subdirectories

Hi all,

I am testing the behaviors of addon domains on my new hosting account and I'm running into a behavior that, while I could live with it, I would like to change.

When I type [addondomain.com...] I get redirected to: [addondomain.originaldomain.com...]

When I type [addondomain.com...] the address remains the same.

Is there any way to make the first example act like the second example, where basically I retain the "mask" of the addon domain name?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Hi Chris

what Control Panel are you using?

Or are you doing it via .htaccess?

On the redirect, it is essential to add the last slash on setting it up.

In my Cpanel, it warns you to do that. If you don't add a last slash to a directory, it assumes the redirect applies to a page only (albeit one without an extension). Tus when you actually try to go to a page, it doesn't recognise it needs to redirect.

I'm using cpanel 7.2.1-RELEASE 65. Is there any way to change it once I've set it? Do I have to delete the addon/redirect and then re-add it?

I should add that I made a mistake above.

If, in my browser, I type [addondomain.com...] without a slash at the end I experience the problem. If I type a slash at the end of the URL it works as it should.

Hi Chris

Go into Cpanel and into the subdomain setup/maintenance.

At the bottom, you have the option to:

Setup Redirection
Remove Redirection
Delete

From the listbox for setup redirection, select the subdomain in question and press setup redirection button.

The dialog box will say SubDomain Redirection and below it will be text box with the location to redirect to.

Click your mouse pointer in the box and go to the end of the address. Does it have a '/' at the end? It SHOULD have! If it doesn't, type one! and Save.

As the subdomain has to propagate on the DNS servers, it may take a few hours before the change is effective.

Did it work?

If I do as you say the box that comes up is blank except for the http:// that's inserted into it automagically.

Should I put something in there or is it possible that they're controlling where my addon domain points from somewhere else?

Hi Chris

Who set up the subdomains for you? You or your host?

If you did it, this is the way you SHOULD have done it, by typing into that box the actual directory you wan the subdomain pointing to.

Try it and see if it works.

If your host hast control of your subdomain setup, then you can only resolve the problem via their tech support. I must say that this is a bit unusual though. Espceially as CPanel gives you that control anyway.

Interstingly, when CPanel loads, your options and availability of those options (such as disk space, email accounts, etc) displays. How many subdomains does it allow you, and how many have you used?
