DNS, CNAME, MX, what are they...?

Hello,

Can anyone please guide me to a dummies guide that explains what all the DNS things are e.g. CNAME, MX etc. at the moment all i know is that a Domain has a NAMESERVER that points to the hosts servers i dont know nothing about DNS stuff.

any help would be appreciated.

DNS, like HTTP, is a protocol that publishes information.

CNAME and MX are types of records that are published. A and PTR are other types that probably round out as the 4 most used record types.

Your DNS server's manual should explain what syntax the records accept. Here's another good guide that's fairly short:
