It seems we've chosen a solution that slows down significantly with several thumbs and over 5000 records. To not make this mistake again, anybody have experience with what systems are good for large image databases?

you mean on a web-server or on a server for local access?

on a web server, probably putting images IN the dbase is not a good idea, I was thinking pointers
