I was using Alltheweb to find out other sites that share the same IP address with my sites. I'm curious what problems are common and also what it means exactly to have a shared IP?

1. If you have a shared IP, does that mean that all the sites with that IP address reside on the same computer?

2. Is there a typical limit to how much bandwidth one IP address can deliver?

3. What would be the maximum number of domains that could easily run off one IP address?

4. Can one site slow things down for everybody on that IP?

5. Does Google ever ban a whole IP address?

Any answers appreciated.
Thanks.

dvduval,

1) Yes, and all use the same network interface card.

2) No, but there is a limit to how much bandwidth one network interface card, or one computer (server) can deliver.

3) That would depend entirely on how busy the sites on those domains were. (You don't want to share your server with eBay - trust me.)

4) Yes, but hopefully the server admins keep an eye out for that. But maybe they don't if it's a $7.00/month account.

5) Rumors and AFAIK, only rumors of this in the past. There are too many name-based virtual servers in the world for Google to do this. It would not be right, and they know it.

If you have a choice between a shared-IP name-based server for $7.00 a month, and your own IP address on a shared hosting setup for $21 a month, spend the extra money. Having your own IP address is nice; it allows you to easily manage multiple domains in your one account, and usually gives you a much better class of tech support. This is your web site, so choose with care. Like choosing a heart surgeon, don't make the hosting decision based soley on cost.
