Hi,

I now own a brand new server (IBM 335x) with win2k OS on it to host my ASP web sites i designed (i host them now on a shared server)

i know that i should add firewall, log analyze software and antivirus (do i realy need it?).

is there any other software that my new server must/better have, and what kind of softwares you guys recommend for the above? (i read the excellent thread about tracking softwares, so i got this one figurate out)

thanks.

I assume that's win2k server? You need the server version to host more than one site. Besides what you've already mentioned I use mail (merak), ftp (serv-u) and database (MS SQL2000) software.

For software firewall zonealarm is my preference.

You might also want remote control software such as pcanywhere or vnc.

I also run some monitoring software that restarts any services that are in trouble and notifies me of any problems.

It's a good idea to disable NetBIOS on your net connection and be sure to install IIS lockdown/URL scan. Also, make sure all the latest service packs and patches are installed and run the MS hfnetchk security programme on a very regular basis.

that is a win2k server.

why do you need serv-u? don't win2k come with ftp server?

what version of zonealarm do you use?

can you give more ditails about the monitoring softwares you use?

thanx.

I use serv-u because I find it a lot more flexible and easy to use than win2k's built in FTP. I can also mirror my serv-u setup by copying a single .ini file.

I don't actually run zonealarm on my server, I use win2k built in IP filtering to restrict which ports are open. Also, when I set up my server zonealarm had problems running on multi cpu machines - I assume this is fixed now so I may add za in the future.

I do use za on some desktop machines but I run on old version because my upgrade licence has expired :) and the version installed does the job fine.

The monitoring software is ipmonitor from deepmetrix.

Cheers
