Can anyone tell me how I can determine the IP address, operating system, Web server and release version for a Web site hosted on a particular Web server?

Hi,

Download VisualRoute and it can tell you most things about a web server, unless the admin of the server has limited the servers response or ICMP packets are blocked by the hosting co. routers

Example output:
Analysis: 'www.webmasterworld.com' was found in 11 hops (TTL=239). It is a HTTP server (running Apache/1.3.26 (Unix) FrontPage/5.0.2.2510).

netcraft.com is probably the most common site that does this kind of thing for you.

If you have a copy of Lynx (a text browser) you can get some good basic info like this:

Lynx -head http://www.example.com

I use an online http header sniffer like the one at [delorie.com...]

WebmasterWorld.com:

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Fri, 02 May 2003 04:52:58 GMT
Server: Apache/1.3.26 (Unix) FrontPage/5.0.2.2510
Cache-Control: max-age=0
Pragma: no-cache
X-Powered-By: BestBBS v3.045
