There use to be a service out there that would allow visitors to be notified (if they wished) when a website they were visiting was updated. They would shoot the surfer an email letting them know the site was updated.

Can this be achieved on the server side using code?

I'm sure there is a PHP script available for that but a mailing list would accomplish the same task.

You could create a mailing list for people that want to know when your site is updated.

Or there might be a more automated process available from a PHP script (if you don't know what PHP is, learn it at [php.net...] ).

At least one service is still available - changedetection.com - it is used by Slipstick, among others. Don't know about coding your own.
