Viewing Alt tags in Netscape 6.2 and 7.0

Alt tags for images aren't visible

I am building a Web page using Dreamweaver MX. For some strange reason, when I look at the Web pages in Netscape 6 or 7, the "alt tag" description does not appear for the image. This problem does not happen when I view the pages in Explorer or an older version of Netscape (4.7}. Does anyone have any answers?

The alt tag text doesn't appear when you place the cursor over an image (if that's what you're refering to) in those versions of Netscape or Opera. You can achieve it by adding a title to the image tag with the same text as the alt.

poohgirl,

Welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com]!

There has been some confusion over image Alts and Titles, and it has made its way into browser implementations.

Image Alt text is what should show when the user has images disabled, or while an image is loading if images are enabled. It is alternate text, to be shown instead of the image. It is also read by screen readers for the blind, so it serves as an alternate representation for the visually-impaired, and should be used as such - to describe the image, and what it does on the page. If it doesn't do anything but provide formatting, like spacer .gifs, then its Alt should be blank.

Image Title text is shown when the cursor is hovered over an image, table, or anything else that can have a Title attribute.

That is the gospel according to Gecko in it's current revision, as used in Netscape and Mozilla browsers.

Microsoft, of course, does their own thing.
