What is DNS forwarding?

I did a site search but couldn't find much information on DNS forwarding and its advantages/disadvantages with respect to SEO.

Can anyone share what exactly is DNS forwarding and for what purpose is it used? If a site uses DNS forwarding, will it be good for search engine robots or bad?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

DNS allows you to set DNS records for your domain and continue to use your existing nameservers, with no interruption in your website. This in turn should not affect your SE rankings, and have no side effects on SE's.

Thanks AF.

Is it advisable to use DNS forwarding when shifting IP's?

Right this is what I think would happen,

If you were using the DNS on x.com while y.com was shifting to the new IP you would still have to have a copy of the site left on the old IP so that x.com is still pointing to your site content. This in turn would allow y.com time to propagate with the new IP. Also when it came time to shift x.com to the new IP you are going to have downtime on that one...

[Disclaimer]I am no technical whiz, and the above post is only going by my logic, so if anyone knows that I might be wrong please go gentle :)[/Disclaimer]

I hope this makes sense :-)
