Should hosting company notify netizens?

When a server goes down, how come there isn't a dedicated backup to notify the visitor that the problem is with the server and not the site being hosted, if this may be the case?

Would this be viewed as poor quality service on the part of the said hosting company, why this isn't done?

Some do, but it is an expensive proposition. It requires some other box in a load sharing environment.

Thanks for the response Brett.

I knew it was possible, and I have not come across one such situation yet.

I really never thought about the financial impact on the business.
