Data accessible through a network independent of platform and source. And computer systems that self-authenticate and are self-aware.
Imagine, your home computer boots up and connects to the Internet. It knows you own it and it knows you're logged on right now. When it connects to the Inet, all your pals will know you're on-line (IM but without the proprietary GUI). When you visit your bank's website you will be automatically logged in and your account information will be made available to you instantly - because your computer authenticated you to the bank's computers automatically. Heck, you don't even have to go to their website, as soon as your on-line, your account info is immediately presented on screen or in Quickbooks, and up-to-the-minute accurate. The airline tickets you ordered show up as does confirmation which you can download to your palm and bring with you to the ticket counter when you leave for the Bahamas.
If you own a BlueTooth palm or cell phone, your computer will automatically update your datebook, addressbook, and phone records as soon as you're within range - like when you drive in your driveway. It'll have the data loaded and waiting for you before you hang your hat and kiss your wife hello.
When you're caught speeding for umpteenth time, the officer will scan the bar code on your driver's license and up will pop your complete history - right up to when you filled up your gas tank 5 minutes ago. The information doesn't reside at the police station. It resides 'somewhere' and the officer's computer has the authority to read it.
Tis a very interesting doorway they're opening.
