Thats some major competition for Google - reduces the need to download the toolbar.
If you do a search on Google for "realnames" you will see several hundred articles on the controversy.
Apparently, Microsoft wanted to have those who mistakenly typed keyword search terms in their browser's address bar to be forwarded as if they typed them into MSN.COM,
When results are calculated as to which search services provide the most traffic eg. Google,Yahoo etc....
Msn's share will be abnormally inflated.
LOL: All I got was a blank page with a errors on page notice below!
if you - for example - put "google" ADDRESS bar you will go to the Msn Search site as if you went there and placed Google in the "Search Bar"
[auto.search.msn.com...]
However - if you put "google.co" , "google.c" etc.,
You will go to the error page - it is assumed that you mistyped the url by leaving OFF "m" or "om" etc. for "com"
However - just putting in a WORD - I.E. will act as Realnames used to do.
[auto.search.msn.com...]
There was a recent report release in December 2002 by StatMarket indicating:
Google, Yahoo, MSN and AOL Account for More Than 90 Percent of Search Referrals to Shopping Web Sites.
Google was first with a referral percentage of 27.16 percent to shopping Web sites, followed by Yahoo (25.92), MSN (24.11) and AOL NetFind (15.60).
Last year Msn had (15.41).

It is NOW the only MAJOR service that has NO connection to Google search.
Since Yahoo is now involved with Inktomi - Will MSN STILL use Inktomi - or will it possibly navigate to Google as a secondary search if Yahoo starts to use Inktomi as it's Web Search.
Will MSN continue to Use Overture as sponsered links or will it use Adwords.
Msn has powerful "advanced search" features - that have gone relatively unnoticed because after putting MSN into
the address bar - one has to then click on the "Search" directory to gain access to the subdomain allowing for the "advanced search" features:

It does seem to work - I have been using it for several months.
However, they only allow one url belonging to the same website per day.
(however, they are programmed to make exceptions, ie:
