Changing a Geocities URL

How do I get old links from other sites to work?

I have a question which I didn't see covered after doing a search under the Dead Link subject.

First this is what happened.

I had a site hosted by, yes, Geocities. The url was www.geocities.com/~name.

Later Geocities changed it to www.geocities.com/name.geo.

Short of having to contact webmasters who appearantly don't check pages they link to, to notify them that a page url was changed. Is there any way to do a redirect when I have no control of the first url? Or is this something I would have to ask geocities to do?
Thanks

Unfortunately, asking Geocities is the only way to implement the redirect you want. A redirect can only redirect FROM "where you are" (www.geocities.com/~name) TO "where you want to go" (www.geocities.com/name.geo).

You should nip the problem in the bud and go ahead and purchase your own domain name so you don't have to run into this problem down the road. Domain names are very inexpensive (say, $15/year) and you could pick up reliable monthly hosting for $10-20 per month. Just a thought. Yes, its a financial investment, but it will pay off in the long run. Your perceived professionalism and credibility will skyrocket with your own domain.

Thanks Korkus2000.
I am not sure if they changed all theirs, but mine, i.e., all the pages were changed. I believe this happened when Y (you know who) bought geo.

I was hoping I didn't have to go there. Those people are hard to reach, by any means. Not that I wouldn't try. But I feel like it would be beating a dead horse.

Thanks to you also Bradley.
I've done that already.
We learn as we go along. In essence we all have to creep before we walk. What I know now, I can only hope I can give learned experience to those who are only beginning to crawl in this field.

Thanks a million to all. On this Thanksgiving period I wish all of you and yours the best. Saying thanks mean so much when you truly have thanks to give to experts and reliable ones such as yourselves.
