I was just checking around PARC's site and noticed a new program that claims to offer superb compression on documents based on their JBIG2 standard.

Silx creates highly compressed images for viewing, archiving, and printing document images and is particularly suited for scanned documents. Compared to standard PDF, black and white Silx files can be up to 10x smaller.

A 1.1 MB pdf file compressed to 132kB. Hopefully this will speed up those pdf downloads.

I get a "there was a problem viewing the document" using Acrobe 4.0CE on Win2k. Unless one is downloading the entire PDF file or searching the entire document, file size is less of an issue as pages are downloaded upon demand. But the compression would be very helpful if it is seamless for the user.

[quote]Silx compression can be used to create either PDF 1.4, compatible with Adobe's free Acrobat Reader 5.0 or higher...[/qoute]
