Malfunctioning History Folder

Anybody know what's causing my "History" folder to play up? It'll tick along for days, then will refuse to display any contents, no matter what options I select. Then (like now, it will refuse to store content).

It's set to store for 80 days and has plenty of memory available - I've tried deleting Temp Internet Files and the stuff that's already stored. Can't figure out what's wrong - can you?

Browse through your windows system until you locate your history folder through "my computer" right click the folder and check permissions. It is a long shot but coudl possibly be that you have set this folder to read only or archive.

Mwaaah!

You're brilliant! Looks like that was the problem! Thanks very much.

I posted about my History Folder not displaying/storing contents a few days back, and got a response from Mac suggesting I look at the folder's Properties. Right enough it had a "read-only" tag checked in Properties, which I unchecked, and all appeared well. However, the problem soon resurfaced. I go back to folder Properties and find that it's reverted to read-only - in fact, it doesn't seem to hold at all - the box will remain unchecked after I click "Apply", but if I go and look immediately afterwards, I find it's reverted back to read-only.

I've tried adjusting stuff in the advanced section of the folder, but that doesn't seem to make any difference.

Anyone had the problem and know how to fix it?

You didn't indicate what operating system you're using but both Win98 and W2K include a utility called System File Checker. On my 2K system, it's repaired many "mysterious" problems without having to rebuild Windoze. Surprisingly, on 2K at least, the help file actually provides some useful info! Check it out! I always follow it up by reinstalling the latest service pack too.

I'm using XP Professional. A quick scan of its sytem tools suggests that XP doesn't have a System File Checker :(

Open a DOS window (Command Prompt window) and try "SFC". The program usually doesn't appear on menus.

I'm a bit of a greenhorn on OS matters, but as far as I know, XP doesn't run on DOS..in any event, you can't call up a Command prompt with XP...a fact I have reason to lament every so often.

I'm a greenhorn with XP! If you have a Start Button that offers a drop down menu and Run is one of your choices, try "SFC" from there...

Boy - did it not like that! I tried running "SFC", and got what looked like the black DOS screen flash up for literally a fraction of a second, so obviously, I'm not meant to be there!

Tried running "System File Checker", bit that only threw up a window of system files, none of which appear to be a utility close to what you describe.

Thanks for your help though - I'll keep rooting around - you don't realise how much you rely on History until it's gone....:)

Not to worry! That's what happens when you try to run a command that the system cannot find. The window opened long enough to present an error message.

I'm outta ideas... This [annoyances.org] looks like a fairly active XP forum, perhaps try your question there...
