But tight IT budgets mean that Web services are being used merely as integration tools, said IDC, noting that "most of the Web services vision is just pure speculation."

Well, I'd have to disagree.

I think that implementation of web services will be well established by then. I strongly believe that these services will be built and proven at the Corporate level. Corporations with a need to share data between distant offices and their customers. As you might expect, it will be the need to conduct business that will drive the technology towards acceptance.

And with the markets as tight as they are Corporations are searching for ways to cut costs and gain a competitive edge. If the IT groups at the large and mid-size corporations can harness web services, (and I think they can) within the next 3-5 years - then I expect we'll see an explosion of activity very soon after. I say, bone up on web services if you're interested and be prepared to ride the Tsunami. Just remember you heard it here first! ;)

I recently went to a Macromedia Dreamweaver MX company demo
at a local user group meeting. The guy from Macromedia said
they are working at making web services as easy to include
in your website code as possible. He demoed adding web
service functionality. It was a snap.

He also said to go out to xmethods dot com to see what type
of publically available webservices are out there right now
for people to use.
