Firstly, yes, I am an idiot. I thought I was removing an old driver for a modem and now windows won't even run. I'm gettin an error saying file VMM32.VXD needed and something about the path has to be set for windows to run.

Again, I'm an idiot!

I don't even have the windows disk. Is there any way I can get the file back in place. I grabbed the file off another box and put it on floppy. I don't know how to that command line stuff.

Can anyone help with this. I'd appreciate it. :)

It's a driver file that needs to go in your Windows/System folder.

What is actually running on the machine, anything?

It starts to load windows 98. The full screen windows image with clouds pops up for a second and then it goes back to dos. Thanks for your reply engine :)

So, if you've got DOS there, try this.

cd\windows\system
press enter

first, check to see if the file exists
type
dir vmm32.VXD
press enter

If not, insert the floppy disk with the driver on it.
type
copy a:\vmm32.vxd
press enter

That should copy the file to your Windows\System directory.
Check it has worked by repeating

type
dir vmm32.VXD
press enter

If that's all you need - away you go.

VXD is usually a video driver.

If that's what you need, someone might be able to email it for you

My experience is that if something like that happens you might be looking at rebuilding the OS. It's a royal pain.

.vxd stands for virtual device driver.
vmm32.vxd is the virtual memory manager driver.

You might have to reinstall windows:

I had a similar problem, had to do with a drive handler. I solved it with the copy command as described above.

If you need the windows 98, look in your local yellow pages for a mom and pop computer discount store, you can usually get things cheaper in there than in the big warehouse stores.

If not, you can always order it from softwareoutlets.com. They have free 3 day FED-EX shipping for orders over $50.

Is birdman up and running? It seems very quiet.

Sorry for the silence! I got really busy on something else. I put the file that I deleted back in and it still didn't work. Now it looks like about 20 .vxd files are gone :( Looks like a reinstall :(:( I'll try again though. Thanks for the help, everyone.
