I have been trying to articulate to the hosting provider that I am accustomed to using that my new customer needs an ftp anonymous log on. He needs to receive large files, mostly databases and graphics. One salesperson suggests Sharepoint, but Tech Support says no, use SA Fileup. Next person says it can't be done at all. (I think they are all missing the point entirely and just throwing around big words.) I don't need a gui, we can teach their customers to ftp from a command prompt, if need be. I just need a second password, maybe to a subdirectory and mostly some warm fuzzy that I am being understood. I really don't want to have to host this site here on my server, but I may have little choice.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Kimberly, does your web host offer additional "virtual FTP" accounts? If it does, you will be able to create new FTP users with password access to specific directories within your web space. Uploading via a web service (SharePoint, SAFileUp) is okay for small files. But if the files are too big, the scripts will time out making it impossible to upload. FTP is better suited for pushing large files like your databases and graphics to the web site.

We pay $50/month for a Windows web host that offers free Virtual FTP accounts. But another $10/month Windows web host we use does not. If your only requirement is having a Virtual FTP, a Unix web host will be less pricey.

I would check out the virtual FTP accounts, most hosts offer this I believe.

If not and you are on a Windoze box try ASP Upload [aspupload.com] and hide the page behind a login?
