How to close a window?

How do I close a window?
Like , let's say we have a pop-up window that has a sign-up for a mailing list. The person ads there e-mail to it and once they click submit I want the window to close. Or I want it to say thanks and have a delayed process, then after let's say 5 seconds, close.

using JavaScript the window.close() method can close a window. However, if the window was not initially opened by JavaScript then the browser will warn the user and prompt them to confirm the window closure.
