Standard on browser referral strings?

Is there a standard covering browser referral strings? I've studied all the appropriate http docs and it's real foggy.

Has anyone done any work on when, where, and how the various browsers send referral strings? It is quite a mixed bag. Someone, somewhere has had to post something about it, haven't they? From email, to bookmarks, to secure sites, to certain url constructs, browsers generally do what they wish with a referral string. I know many of the specifics, but looking for some research sources. Got any?
