I am in the process of a redesign of the site of the company I work for. They want me to use a font similar to a custom font that they use for their ads and brochures. The closest match is Garmond and the common match is Times Roman. My question is what fonts are the most common to everyone. I am trying to find a common font that is easier to read and makes for cleaner graphics. Personally I like Verdana or Tahoma but the powers that be don't. I am mostly looking for a font for html. Thanks in advance.

Hi-

I think verdana, helvetica and Times Roman are the most common.

You might be interested in this study of commonly installed Windows fonts [codestyle.org]. There are many relatively common fonts, but of course none is at 100% availability. Garamond comes in with a 66% user base here.

Also, here's a helpful font usability study from the University of Wichita [psychology.wichita.edu]. In fact, their psychology dept has several practical web usability studies online.

Personally I like Verdana or Tahoma

That seems to be a general user preference - in general people prefer sans-serif fonts. The problem with serif fonts is that they "fight against" the square block nature of screen pixels. Verdana was intentionally created to minimize that.
