Checking for Dead Links

Need a free link checker.

Anyone know of a free resource that'll scan my site for dead links?

Tried Netmechanic, but it seems to be down.

I need something 1) that'll drill a site at least 3 pages deep, 2) that's free, 3) that I can get my hands on ASAP.

I use frontpage, I think a few editors have the capability.

I wouldn't use the online ones - I verify links on my site offline and jump online for any externals that need to be checked out.

Now its been brought to my attention that the links should actually be checked one by one, by human eyes, to make sure the content is OK - not suggesting everyone shoudl do it thought - I can relate to it being a pain in the.....and glad they have software for it

Atomz.com, besides being an excellent search engine (and free for small sites <500 documents), will give you a report of 4xx errors that turn up when it indexes your site. This could be an option, provided that you are talking about a site that is already available on the public Internet.

HomeSite and Dreamweaver both have internal link checking tools, but of course you must own the tools and have them configured precisely.

Personally, I use WebTrends Professional Suite (now WebTrends Analysis Suite, Standard Edition), which boasts a robust link checker that comes "free" with the meat of the software (log analysis), which is far from free...

I have regularly used the W3C link checker, but at present I can't get it to check more than one page at a time. Is the deep crawl feature working for anyone? If so, what exact combination of options and syntax you are using?

The reason is that online businesses do go out of business and their domains get sold, often to unsavory new owners. Good idea, but too much work for me!
