Hi all,

I am new to the boards-- looks like there are some experts here , so perhaps you may be able to help me out.

I d'ont know if you can shed any light on this situation but I hope you can.

I am working on a particular project that will be recieved by a wide audience. In order to make sure that the project works on different operating systems, and with different browsers I have started to check it.

However if I test on Windows Xp machine with IE6 Project will not run! All that appears is a thumbnail. I understand this is down to the fact that Microsoft have ommitted support for JVM from both Windows XP and IE 6.0, can anyone confirm this?

If this is the case what can I do to ensure it runs ok, does it download JVM automatically or does it wait for you to cop on to the fact that you need to download it?

Please help.... I am lost!

Thanks
:)

I just installed Sun's VJM [java.sun.com] and situations like you describe began to work fine.

If this isn't what you were asking, at least this reply will send you to the top :)

Might have something to do with an article I recently read in IDM [idm.net.au].
...Microsoft is to withdraw support for Java in its Windows operating system in 2004.

....latest version of Windows XP already doesn't support Java....

Microsoft still carries a JVM, but it's 1.1.4 (I think).
So if your code uses any classes that are not present in 1.1.4 - you need to download Sun's implementation.

Thanks for your replys.

Sorry to sound thick but will Suns Implementation of JVM work on Microsoft platforms and browsers?

I have tried to download JVM from Microsoft but the link which I am taken to says it is no longer available, I could probably contact them for it, but thinking of my intented audience for the project -- they should not have to go to the trouble of contacting Microsoft just to run the project.

Called Microsoft Help... they were completely clueless!

Yes, Sun's version works fine with IE.

An XP/IE6 user reported to me that when he initially went to one of my sites that use Java applets, he was prompted to download/install the JVM. He could not tell me what flavor, but I assume it was Microsoft's.
