...what features am I looking for when shopping for a shopping cart?
That's really the question you must answer - and honestly, YOU must answer it. Here are some areas I consider - and the answer is different for different sites and purposes.
1. Security for customer information
2. Do you need automatic page generation - and if so, how spider-friendly?
3. Is it nearly a turnkey app or highly customizable?
4. Keeping information for return customers
5. Portability when you change hosting
6. Real time charging, or charged later
The list goes on and on, so you must really sink into the particulars of what you hope to accomplish.
I've seen Miva scripted carts work well - but if you change hosts (hey, it happens!) you need a new host who will support it.
