Can I ask why you want to put an IE icon on your home page?

I was wondering the exact same. I am slightly hesitant to help with a "you will need to download IE to use my site".

nothing personal

(not trying to be a jerk)

Is there a purpose in declaring the fact that your page is IE friendly? I've always believed that actions speak louder than words.

**it USE to be cool (KIND OF) to have a little icon that said IE compatible or compliant, etc. That is no longer true**

midi25,

i would not bother to declare that your're site is friendly by means like that, why ?

there was a thread a while back that said it was not a smart move.

but, its certainly not necessary, because if it is not IE, NN, Opera friendly, then it won't resolve properly and your visitor will bugger off to another site that will.

I would be more concerned with making sure that your site can resolve to the majority of browsers in use, and that if need be can drop down to 760 width resolution.

I was thinking that might be your reasoning, which is why I asked. My opinion on it is that there is some harm in it - not much, mind you, but a little. There's definitely no advantage that I can see, so to me it seems like you are wasting your time and energy looking for the icon. Reasons for not putting such an icon on your site:

1. It's a waste of bandwidth. Even the MSN site uses a text link and not an icon (a few bytes versus a vew kilobytes).

2. It's unnecessary. Everyone assumes that sites are IE friendly. It might be news if a site were Amaya-friendly, but there's no real point in saying that you site supports the browser used by roughly nine out of ten users. If it isn't, no one will visit.

3. The only reason to tell users which browser your site supports is to suggest that, if they don't have one of those browsers, they can download one. Since that's the case, you could just make a site that says it is compatible with "all modern browsers" and provide a link to the Web Standards Project upgrade page, which lists several browsers.

[webstandards.org...]

4. Clutters up your page

Reasons for including such an icon:

1. You're being paid by a browser company? Personally, I'm definitely for sale if Bill Gates wants to write a check, the icon goes up in 24 hours!

Sorry for the bad joke

Hello Midi25, ultimately the choice IS yours to make, but I would be more concerned with earning validation buttons for XHTML, CSS and WAI... those show you really are concerned with building a "friendly site." But then, I wouldn't place those buttons on my page either... "Show don't tell," fits the situation very well.

By the way, I did a quick look on the MS site and I have no idea how you get those icons. I don't think MS pushes them any more. Like I said, even MSNBC just has a text link.

If you see them on lots of sites, why don't you just take one of those? Undoubtedly, the copyright belongs to MS and they would be thrilled to have you advertise for them.

Like papabaer said, it's your choice. I just wanted to encourage you to think about it a bit.

ergophobe, I haven't seen many of those IE 'gifs for quite sometime either. The last time I actually noticed one I was visiting the site of a small webhosting company... old n'dusty, with a IE button and a Netscape Navigator .gif as well. What no Opera?!!

I bet you could find plenty visiting the Wayback Machine! ;)

Do a Google image search (with quotes): "MSIE logo"

Yeah, the ones that I've seen recently usually say that the site looks best in Netscape 4.5 or IE 4. I saw one recently that said "Best Viewed with Netscape 3.0" which, prima facie, seems impossible! Is *anything* best viewed with Netscape 3.0?
