I think i still have "minimalist page design" listed in my interests in my profile. If not I minimalised my listing too much.

This link has come up at daypop and blogdex quite a bit (for those who dont visit daily like me!)

[the5k.org...]

Basically they run a competition, (and the 2002 one just started!,) where a panel of judges decide on the best web page that is under 5Kb. Categories such as aesthetics etc... and separate divisions for html purists (just the html maam) or cutting edge guys (js and flash rules OK!) There is also an archive of past winners which is worth a peek.

Just thought a few here might be interested. Im sure my WebmasterWorld friends will be up for the challenge.

(And sorry RCjordan, but there is no category for "ugliest" ;)) ...and broadbanders... eat your heart out.. (said in loving jest as always...)

heh, these are the sort of competitions that will make the web a better place!

Are you going to submit something chiyo? :)

I have a page ranked 8 on G for a 7m term.....and hey....its 5k!

Nothing special on the page though, just bare bones HTML and an ugly design :) Dont think i'll be submitting anything, though would love to hear from those who do :)

only with pure CSS design a perfect 5k page is possible.

...and broadbanders... eat your heart out..

but us broadbanders will flip through the gallery like a deck of cards.

when there is a gallery... too bad the old galleries are serving errors.

brotherhood of man,,,

nope im not entering. my problem is i cant keep under 5k as i talk too much! its a problem ive had for a few decades..

Sean.. i only looked at 2 examples.. in the "overall" category of the plain html category in 2001. both those worked.

Maybe you were looking in the "cutting edge/flash/dhtml section"? Those sort of pages are probably more prone to decay over time and failing in diff browsers/configs as they are more complex, and generally the developers are always changing them as they like experimenting with new technologies.

Are they looking for cross browser compatibility... or just version 5+?

(I'm sure the answer is on the site somewhere... too busy/lazy to go and look myself right now!) :)

just had a look and most of mine seem to come in at 5-6k...unfortunately the really neat ones are 7-8k

I may have a go at it with my Usenet FAQ page though

Yeah, I see that too - MS OLE error accessing MS SQL. Go figure.

Love the Copyright info.

What???

In Opera, almost none of these pages work. I checked one in IE and it had a calculator that was pretty cool, but it just displayed x^2 in Opera. Most of the rest were just empty splash screens (and we hates splash screens) with no content. Sure, if there's nothing on your page and completely obscure navigation, you can get pretty pages at under 5k, but what's the point.

Perhaps I should look in IE before I judge, but ....

I think maybe most, if not all, of these pages (escpecially if you look at the competition intro (ie "build" a site under 5K) were made specifically for this purpose and are not "working" pages. Seeing they are all at least 1 year old as well, I guess they are just left to die. Learning point? Check all your pages (especially old ones) on all browsers. I would hope that cross browser/screen size/resolution/ including text only browsers like Lynx be a factor in such competitions.

Yeah, the 5k is a classic. I followed it last year it was great. One of the sites was called 'pixelchicks'

only with pure CSS design a perfect 5k page is possible.

Not so, but a good point regardless. They had planned to have a html/css only catagory this year but for some unkown reason it has been postponed unitill further notice. Shame.

The 2002 5k competition entries are online.
Here's the list [the5k.org] with links.

My favourite [the5k.org] so far. Haven't viewed them all.

I'm going to enter next year's competition just to see what I could do.

I couldn't think of an idea for an entry. Now I've just had an idea, that uses some code I've already got so I could make it in 2 minutes, but it's already 10 days too late to submit. Damn. Oh well, I'm sure one of you will post a reminder here in 2003.
